Wordy Wednesday

I have the habit of coming across a word that I know, but don't really know. This means that I've basically have made up my own definition to fit the meaning of the sentence. Recently, I've been reading books on my Nexus and, at first, I was totally against e-reading. Reading is meant to be done with dusty, yellowing pages, not on an impassive screen.

I found e-reading's redeeming value!

I can highlight a word and the definition pops up! Easy access! Learning the actual definitions also bring a whole new - and proper - understanding. Although sometimes my definitions are a lot more interesting, but I'll go by what the dictionary says, I suppose.

Wordy Wednesday: The Pacifier Saga, Day 3

Today is the third day going without a pacifier. We started on Monday when we only used it at naptime and bedtime. It was a good day. Baby Girl was in a really fun and playful mood. Tuesday, Pastor Husband and I caved. We gave in about a half hour before lunch. She was fine after that and, again, only used it to sleep. Today we entered into day three...

Today was a success! Minus the complete meltdown this morning. Baby Girl actually did the same thing yesterday morning and Pastor Husband and I are completely baffled as to why this is happening. She's not crying for the pacifier, she's just crying. It's not teething and she isn't sick. The second her favorite cartoon came on she was fine and just sat with me. The poor thing didn't even make it through breakfast this morning.

However, today I will count as a success because we went the whole day without me giving in and plugging her up with a pacifier. Baby Girl even went through her entire afternoon nap without one! Tomorrow will be the same routine and then Friday - the big night! - we'll try to do bedtime pacifier free.

I'm not sure why I picked this week to start this, but I did and now I have to stay dedicated. I realized that the pacifier is really my bad habit, not Baby Girl's habit. She doesn't look for it, ask for it, and will only take it if she happens to see it. It's more our crutch than any thing else. It takes such discipline from yourself to raise a child! I knew this, but I'm really beginning to realize it as she gets older and learns new "tricks"!

Lent

(I'm totally scooping this from someone else. She's an amazing writer and storyteller and I was lucky enough to have lunch with her a couple of years ago. I love Margaret Feinberg...read everything she writes, you won't be sorry!)

The Latin word for "lent" is "Quadragesima", which basically translates to forty. Hence, the forty days between Ash Wednesday and Easter.

This is what Margaret has to say about it:

"Originally, Lent was designed as a time of preparation and worship for the believer. The forty days before Easter were set aside for penitence, prayer, and self-denial.

The number forty has repetitive significance in the Bible.

It rained for 40 days when Noah was on the ark (Genesis 7:17). Moses spent 40 days on Mt. Sinai(Exodus 24:18). The Israelites spent 40 years wandering in the wilderness before entering the Promised Land (Numbers 14:33). Elijah spent 40 days walking to Mt. Horeb (1 Kings 19:8). Jesus fasted for 40 days and was tempted by Satan (Matthew 4:1-2). Ever notice that God has a track-record of displaying His mighty wonders in increments of forty?

Beginning on Ash Wednesday (which falls on February 13nd, this year), many people choose to give something up for 40 days in this season of preparation.

But as I suggest in Wonderstruck, maybe the question we need to ask as we enter Lent isn’t, “What are you giving up for Lent?” as much as “What do you want to lay hold of during Lent?” [Tweet this]

"Arf Arf" :)

Baby Girl has a love for dogs, big and small. She has this book that has pictures of animals and then you press the button and it makes the animal sound (thank you, Auntie Tina!). One day while we were reading she started repeating the puppy sound. Only her "arf arf" is more of a rough "hmm hmm". She can also do the "roar" for a lion.

Pastor Husband and I truly delight in Baby Girl. Just to watch her as she plays on her own or as she reads, learning what she likes to do (for the moment) and doesn't like. It's just amazing. I asked Pastor Husband a couple of nights ago if he still wondered at the fact that we have been entrusted to raise this little human being. It's a little overwhelming, that thought, but God knows what He's doing!

I'm not sure why Pastor Husband brought this up this morning. Maybe it was something on the radio. I don't know, but he wanted to know what "keel" meant and why we say "keel over". I didn't know the actual definition, but I told him that I was always imagine a person sloping over to their side, like a slumped over flower. Turns out...I was kind of right!

Yesterday, was muy divertido! We got to go to Disneyland and Baby Girl is so spoiled...she's been twice in less than a year!

This is how she spent most of the first trip.

This time she was awake for most of the rides and I think she really enjoyed them! We went on The Haunted Mansion, some Bug's Life ride where you fly in a bug-made hot air balloon, Winnie the Pooh, It's a Small World, and the Toy Story ride in California Adventure. On that ride, each time it whipped around she would look up at me and smile. Baby Girl is going to love all rides, I think, and that is good news for Pastor Husband. I can't even go on Splash Mountain! I'm okay with waiting, walking around, and shopping while everyone else gets dropped down, turned upside down, and thrown around at a million miles per hour.

We got pictures with the big ol' Mainstreet Christmas Tree, Mickey Mouse, Snow White and Donald Duck. After the picture with Mickey Baby Girl would get so excited each time she would she him or another character. I'm so glad she wasn't scared of the giant mouse, which, I noticed, I'm taller than that once giant mouse!

My theory is that babies really don't say their first word when they're under the age of one. I think their "words" are really sounds that sound like a word to us. They have no idea that their sounds are the names of things or people or have any meaning. Baby Girl has been saying "dada", "momma", and "wiggle wiggle" for months now, but she doesn't relate those sounds or words to anything. They're just constant sounds that she makes as she goes about her day, cruising from the living room to the hallway, which leads to her room and sometimes she takes a side trip to the bathroom.

I don't know...I could be entirely wrong. Maybe there are babies out there that can comprehend what they are saying. Baby Girl, right now, is just a babble of sounds that warm my heart (when she's not screaming them), that make me laugh (when she "talks" to Pocoyo or her monohead), and that I truly delight in.

It was reported to me that Pastor Husband used this word at Young Adult Camp last weekend when he spoke to the group. The informant and I both did not believe it was an actual word. Pastor Husband proved last night that it's real! Apparently, I don't read enough of the KJV of the bible so I was unaware that it uses the word 173 times! To compare, the NIV only uses "arose" 11 times.

Baby Girl is a CHOC baby and it definitely helps to put Pastor Husband's heart and my heart at ease. We take her there for her check-ups and it was through CHOC that she had her MRI. This is walk is for CHOC and all the many many babies and kids that go in and out of their doors whether it's for routine maintenance (haha!) or something more serious.

Ezer Kenegdo - "Help Meet" (Genesis 2:18, KJV)

"Hebrew scholar Robert Alter, who has spent years translating the book of Genesis, says that this phrase is 'notoriously difficult to translate.' The various attempts we have in English are 'helper' or 'companion' or the notorious 'help meet.' [...] Alter is getting close when he translates it 'sustainer beside him.'

The word ezer is used only twenty other places in the entire Old Testament. And in every other instance the person being described is God himself, when you need him to come through for you desperately.

Kenegdo means alongside, or opposite to, a counterpart.

You see, the life God calls us to is not a safe life [...] God calls us to a life involving frequent risks and many dangers. Why else would we need him to our ezer?" (Eldredge, Captivating 31-32)

Why else would we, as daughters of God, be described as an ezer?

On Sunday, Pastor Husband thought he made up another word, but one of our HS-ers looked it up and it really is a word!

We're going to do a year-long series all about Jesus. Now, don't get the wrong idea, we talk/learn about Jesus every Sunday. For this series though we are delving into the details of Jesus. Pastor Husband's goal is that we really KNOW Jesus. "The more you know..." (remember those commercials?). I'm looking forward to it!

I like this word because it's definition is not what I think it should be...the sound of it is just so scary-movie sounding. There needs to be a horror movie with this word as the title and, I guess, if you got someone really clever to write it then the title could possibly make sense. Also, Pastor Husband used this word on Sunday, correctly...it was great!
